Alexandra Lyons is an insurance and reinsurance lawyer, with over 10 years' experience advising on coverage claims and disputes. She specialises in complex, high-value first and third-party claims across the energy, property, construction and aviation sectors.

She advises London market (Lloyd’s and company) and international insurers and reinsurers and acts in multi-jurisdictional litigation and arbitration. She also advises on non-contentious insurance law issues and has a special interest in ESG and the energy transition.

She has previously undertaken secondments to a global insurer and a global insurance broker.

  • Advising on multiple aviation-related coverage claims and litigations across the UK and Ireland, arising from the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the Western sanctions response.
  • Advising on CAR and OAR claims for PD/BI following catastrophic failure of a wind turbine at one of Europe's largest onshore windfarms.
  • Advising reinsurers on OAR claim following destruction of hydroelectric power plant in India.
  • Advising on coverage claim for failure of generators at power station in Oman.
  • Acting for insurer in multi-jurisdictional dispute concerning a series of binding authority agreements including Commercial Court litigation.
  • Advising numerous London market and international reinsurers in connection with COVID-19 related treaty reinsurance contracts, with a particular focus on reinsurance aggregation and reinstatement issues, including in the landmark appeal from arbitration in Markel International Insurance Co Ltd -v- General Reinsurance AG [2024] EWHC 253 (Comm).
  • Advising numerous UK and international insurers in connection with COVID-19 related claims exposures concerning property damage and business interruption.
  • Advising on DE3 cover concerning alleged defective workmanship at high-profile tourist attraction.
  • Advising excess layer insurers on claim concerning construction dispute over numerous schools in Ireland.
  • Advising on complex PD and BI coverage issues following the failure of a transformer at a power plant in ROI, and helping them to negotiate a resolution of the multi-million dollar loss impacted by the energy price crisis.
  • Acting for primary and excess layer insurers on USD1.3bn insurance coverage dispute in the Commercial Court regarding a North Sea jack-up platform.
  • Advising on significant PD and BI facultative reinsurance claim concerning cable damage at windfarm offshore Germany.
  • Acting for reinsurers in Trinidad and Tobago litigation concerning coverage dispute following subsea cable failure affecting the electrical grid.
