Recent highlights include obtaining a significant victory for the Republic of Guinea in its multi-billion euro mining investment arbitration against BSGR, touted by media commentators as “one of the most complex arbitrations in the history of Africa”; advising a Chinese consortium of lenders on the development and financing of the circa. USD 3 billion Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline in Nigeria (the AKK Pipeline); advising Safaricom, one of Africa’s largest telecommunications companies, on obtaining the first mobile licence in Ethiopia; and advising Africa’s largest supermarket retailer, Shoprite Holdings, on its acquisition of a portfolio of retail assets from Massmart, a subsidiary of the world’s largest grocer, Walmart.

Africa is also a key focus for our global pro bono initiative. Activities have included working with UNHCR to protect children in East Africa from statelessness; working with GenderCC South Africa to improve climate resilience and food security, and create sustainable jobs at urban farming sites across Johannesburg; and providing access to justice in Zambia. Through our global scholarships program, we are also sponsoring students from Ethiopia, Senegal, Uganda and Zambia. Each is provided funding, mentoring and internships, to help them contribute to the rule of law in their communities and globally.
